Since 1997, the purpose of the Gay Democrats of Suffolk County has been to interview Democratic candidates running for office on ballots in Suffolk County and to support and/or endorse those candidates who are responsive to issues concerning the Gay and Lesbian community. We aspire to be an active participant and voice within the Suffolk County Democratic Party as well as the community at large.
Two years after we formed, the Suffolk County Democratic Committee authorized the Gay Democrats of Suffolk County to have our Chairperson serve on its' Executive Committee. In addition, we have also had members serve on the Screening Committee of the Suffolk County Democratic Committee, and our founder, Tom Hroncich, was selected to serve as a Vice Chair of the Suffolk County Democratic Committee from 1999 to 2000.
Our current Treasurer, Lauren Van Kirk, is a New York State Democratic Committeeperson and, in 2004, attended the Democratic National Convention as a delegate for John Kerry.
Other candidates we have supported through financial donations and/or volunteer support in the past include Jon Cooper (the first openly gay elected official in Long Island's history), Tim Bishop, David Bishop, Hillary Clinton, Patricia Eddington, Steve Englebright, Ginny Fields, Vivian Viloria Fisher, Al Gore, Tom Hroncich, Steve Israel, Jim Larocca, Donna Lent, Steve Levy, Debra Mazzarelli, Carl McCall, Maxine Postal, Tom Spota, and Bob Sweeney, among others.
As an official chapter of the National Stonewall Democrats, we have dedicated ourselves to continue the mission set forth eleven years ago when this organization was first created, as well as to now support those political efforts we believe in at the national level as well.
We look forward to continuing to serve the Suffolk County GLBT community and educating our Suffolk County Democratic brothers and sisters on issues that are relevant to the GLBT community at the local and national level.
